Candy Factory

Candy Factory
CandyFactory is an educational game that teaches the concept of fractions to middle school students based on splitting operations with partitioning and iterating. It consists of three levels: Level 1 teaches proper fractions as part-whole concept. Level 2 teaches proper fractions as whole concept. Level 3 teaches proper as well as improper fractions as whole concept. A nominal score is displayed at the end of the game to show how well the student has done. Sound-based feedback and background music are provided.

COOP Fractions

Coop Fractions
Learn to ace fractions with this suite of hilarious chicken-themed educational games.
Rocket rooster: adding fractions
Improve your ability to add fractions as you choose the right set of rockets to fire Ernie into the nest. In this hilarious game there are fifty levels to complete and each one will help you get to grips with addition and multiplication of fractions.
Simply-frying fractions: simplifying fractions
Help kung fu chicken in his quest to simplify fractions by finding the common factors of the numerator and denominator. You will need to be a black belt at finding highest common factors to get a good score.
Bad egg: equivalent fractions
Smash the rotten egg by clicking on the fraction that is not equivalent to the others. By playing this game your students will develop a variety of mental strategies that help them to identify equivalent fractions.
Chicken coop painter: comparing fractions
Use your knowledge of fractions to paint a chicken coop according to the hen's instructions! This clever game will teach your students to visualise and compare the value of different fractions.
Chicken coop game: estimating fractions
You will be shown a fraction and your job is to estimate the decimal equivalent by placing a nest on a number line. Our hens are mathematical experts and they will fire their eggs towards the correct answer. If your estimate is good the eggs will be caught in the nest but if you're too far out it all gets very messy.

EDM Fractions

EDM - Fractions
Players try to match equivalent fractions on cards showing halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths, and twelfths. When cards are matched, they disappear and points are awarded. As cards disappear from the array, the cards behind them become accessible. The game ends when all cards are matched or no more matches can be made. Players earn extra points for making two or more matches in a row. To earn all possible points, players must clear the board!

Features of Equivalent Fractions:
- Fraction cards contain visual representations of fractions
- Ability to compare fraction cards by clicking and dragging
- Practices fraction concepts and relationships
- Correct and incorrect answer feedback
- Full tutorial

Fractions by Motion Math

Fractions by Motion Math
Developed at the Stanford School of Education, Motion Math HD follows a star that has fallen from space, and must bound back up, up, up to its home in the stars. Moving fractions to their correct place on the number line is the only way to return. A rigorous, published experiment showed that by playing Motion Math HD for a week, learners improved by 15% on average in their ability to estimate fractions and their attitudes toward math. (More info: http://bit.ly/motionmathstudy)

OVERVIEW
Loved by children as young as 7 and as old at 17 (and adults too!), Motion Math gives learners a physical experience of the number line and an intuitive feeling for fractions. Fractions are a difficult area and if a learner never gains a gut sense for them, it can impede progress in more advanced forms of math. Motion Math helps learners perceive and estimate many representations -- numerator over denominator (1/2), percents (50%), decimals (.5), and even pie charts. Motion Math was inspired by embodied cognition, research suggesting that connecting one's body to abstract concepts can deepen understanding. By estimating each problem with its distance on the number line, learners can develop a fast, accurate perception of fractions.
ENGAGING PLAY
The Motion Math game follows a star trying to return to its home in a far-away galaxy. Moving up through different levels motivates a player to keep playing and keep learning, while bonus levels practice an important variation on the number line theme - is one fraction more or less than another? Progress stars, sound and star effects, and exclamations (“Yes!” “Perfect!”) reward a player for solving problems.
PROBLEM HINTS
If a player is having trouble, increasingly helpful hints (what educators call "scaffolding”) guide him or her to the correct place on the number line.
- First, a directional arrow is shown.
- Next, tick marks show the fraction’s denominator.
- Third, similar fractions are shown for comparison.
- Lastly, in early levels, a vertical arrow shows exactly where to go.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
- Intro level shows player how to tilt to control the star.
- Later levels practice improper fractions and negative decimals.
- Beginner, medium, and expert modes for different learners.

Virtual Manipulatives

Virtual Manipulatives
I have provided a virtual set of fraction bars on www.abcya.com for several years. Many teachers have contacted me about creating a similar application for the iPad. Here it is! I offer this app for free because virtual manipulatives alone do not provide meaning for learners; they require a teacher to guide meaning and connections.

Pizza - Fractions

Pizza
Pizza Fractions offers a simple, visually-based introduction to fractions for elementary school kids.
In chef's pizzeria your child masters the concept of naming simple fractions using pizza picture examples. Designed for grade levels 2-5, Pizza Fractions provides introductory practice with fractions in an approachable game-like environment.

Key features include:
  • players presented with randomly generated fractions to identify by counting slices of pizza
  • entry level simple fractions build confidence with denominators 1-12, excluding sevenths and elevenths
  • adjustable level of difficulty allows beginners to start with easier fractions and progress as they learn
  • option to advance questions by shaking the device or using a button
  • score data and round timing allows you and your child to compete by alternating rounds
  • animated cartoon chef and comical sound effects lend appeal to the learning process

Tiny Fractions

Tiny Fractions
The Tiny Fractions App provides an ideal visual practice environment for you to master fraction concepts. The app uses a simple, tactile interface where you can tap the screen to create a fraction from a Vial of Liquid. The difficulty level of the game is adaptive and as you master the simpler fractions, questions with a higher level of difficulty are presented.
